“I Heard Your Voice” Is No Longer Proof. The Rise of AI Deepfake Scams.

A paralegal receives a voicemail from what sounds exactly like the firm’s managing partner. The message is urgent: a wire transfer needs to go out immediately for a settlement. Do not wait for a callback. Handle it now.

The managing partner was in court all morning. He never called.

The voice was generated by artificial intelligence, and it took less than 30 seconds of audio to clone.

AI voice and video deepfakes have moved from experimental technology to an accessible criminal tool. In 2025 and 2026, deepfake scams targeting businesses have surged. A criminal only needs a short audio sample, easily pulled from a public video, podcast, or voicemail greeting, to generate a convincing clone.

Most firms have no policy to defend against it because most firms do not yet know it exists.

Attorneys are authority figures. When a managing partner or named partner calls with an urgent request, staff are trained to respond. That trust is exactly what these scams exploit.

The combination of urgency, familiar voice, and a plausible scenario (wire transfer, document request, credentials) is designed to bypass critical thinking entirely.

  • Establish a verbal code word policy. Any urgent financial request made by phone, even from a recognized voice, requires a pre-agreed code word before action is taken.
  • Require a second verification channel. If a voice call requests something sensitive, confirm via a separate method like a direct text to the person’s personal cell.
  • Educate your team that hearing a voice is no longer sufficient verification on its own. This is the most important cultural shift your firm can make right now.
  • Limit publicly available audio of firm leadership. Less source material means harder cloning. Review public videos, podcasts, and voicemail greetings with fresh eyes.

The technology to clone a voice costs criminals almost nothing. The damage to your firm, financially and reputationally, can be catastrophic. The firms that survive this wave of fraud will be the ones who trained their teams before an incident happened, not after.
